Alé BTC Ljubljana: con una stagione super si chiude un ciclo che ha fatto la storia del ciclismo femminile

Con la Ronde van Drenthe di fine ottobre, ultima prova dell’UCI Women’s WorldTour, si è conclusa la stagione 2021 del team Alé BTC Ljubljana. Una stagione straordinaria, ricca di risultati, con 20 vittorie totali, 17 di livello UCI, mai così tante nella storia del team femminile veronese, la conquista di una medaglia d’oro europea a cronometro e due splendide medaglie d’argento, sempre a cronometro, sempre con la svizzera Marlen Reusser, ai Giochi Olimpici di Tokyo 2020 e ai Mondiali su strada Fiandre 2021. La squadra è entrata per 110 volte nella Top 10.
Una stagione ricca di successi che ha portato a compimento nel migliore dei modi un progetto di squadra cominciato nel 2011 grazie alla lungimiranza del suo presidente Alessia Piccolo, del Marchio Alé e più in generale di A.P.G. Srl e della famiglia Zecchetto, che per primi, in tempi non sospetti, hanno deciso di credere e investire nel ciclismo femminile, creando una squadra che in pochi anni è diventata una delle realtà più importanti al mondo, in un settore che negli ultimi anni ha vissuto una crescita esponenziale.
Dal prossimo anno, come già è stato annunciato nelle settimane scorse, la squadra confluirà in un nuovo progetto marchiato Team UAE che aprirà un nuovo capitolo e nuovi scenari a questa splendida avventura. Ma prima di pensare al futuro, oggi vogliamo ancora per un attimo concentrarci sul passato, su questo splendido ciclo di 11 anni voluto da Alessia Piccolo, negli ultimi 7 anni con a capo del progetto tecnico il team manager Fortunato Lacquaniti e su questa ultima magnifica stagione.

La presidente Alessia Piccolo ha commentato: “Da donna, da manager e da appassionata di ciclismo ho sempre creduto nelle potenzialità del ciclismo femminile e con orgoglio possiamo dire di essere stati tra i primi a credere in questo movimento e a creare una squadra professionistica esclusivamente femminile. Negli anni siamo cresciuti tanto, ci siamo tolti delle belle soddisfazioni e credo che abbiamo dato un grosso contributo alla crescita sportiva e d’immagine di questo movimento, in Italia e nel mondo. Devo ringraziare tutte le ragazze che nel corso di queste undici stagioni hanno vestito e onorato la maglia del nostro team. Grazie agli amici sloveni di BTC Ljubjana che negli ultimi anni hanno condiviso con noi un pezzo del nostro cammino. Devo fare un grosso ringraziamento a tutti i componenti dello staff che ci hanno messo grande impegno e con la loro professionalità hanno supportato al meglio l’attività delle nostre ragazze. Un ringraziamento speciale lo devo fare a Fortunato Lacquaniti che, negli ultimi 7 anni, nel ruolo di team manager ha dato un grande contributo alla crescita del nostro team. Nonostante le tante difficoltà dettate anche dalla complicata situazione sanitaria che abbiamo vissuto in questi ultimi due anni, le nostre ragazze sono riuscite sempre ad essere protagoniste, a farsi onore e a portarci ai vertici delle classifiche mondiali. Quest’anno poi siamo riusciti a raggiugere un grande sogno come la medaglia olimpica che ci ha regalato Marlen Reusser. Chiudiamo un capitolo importante della nostra vita e passiamo la mano. Ritengo oggi, insieme ai miei collaboratori, di aver fatto qualcosa di molto importante. Soprattutto, questo nuovo passo è un atto d’amore e di responsabilità nei confronti delle ragazze e di tutto il movimento femminile, che sta crescendo a vista d’occhio. Con questa intesa con UAE, possiamo garantire continuità a un progetto che ci sta tanto a cuore”.

Proprio dagli straordinari risultati ottenuti quest’anno parte l’analisi del team manager Fortunato Lacquaniti: “In questo 2021 il nostro progetto ha raggiunto il suo apice e i frutti di tutto quello che abbiamo costruito in questi anni, sia in termini sportivi che di immagine. Credo sia stato il giusto epilogo a coronamento di un percorso incredibile, al termine del quale siamo riusciti a raggiungere tutti gli obbiettivi che ci eravamo prefissati, anzi anche qualcosa in più di quello che potevo immaginare quando sono partito 7 anni fa con questa squadra. Abbiamo cominciato con una piccola squadra di sole atlete italiane, poi è arrivato il grande passo nel WorldTour, quando, allora, in tanti criticavano questa mia scelta, ma che alla lunga mi ha dato ragione. Ora abbiamo un team che, seppur con budget lontano dai top team, è riuscito a raggiungere il quarto posto nella classifica mondiale dietro a super squadroni e davanti ad altre realtà molto più grandi e strutturate di noi. Questo ci deve riempire di orgoglio e penso ricompensa tutti del grande lavoro che abbiamo svolto”.

Lacquaniti aggiunge: “Personalmente devo ringraziare la famiglia Zecchetto ed Alessia Piccolo che sette anni fa mi hanno dato l’opportunità di guidare questo team e di poter portare avanti le mie idee. Gli va dato atto sicuramente che sono stati tra i primi a credere ed investire nel ciclismo femminile. Ringrazio tutta la squadra, tutti i componenti dello staff che nel corso degli anni hanno dato ciascuno un grande contributo per la crescita di questo team. Tutti ci hanno messo il massimo impegno e insieme abbiamo costruito qualcosa di speciale. Devo dire grazie a tutte le ragazze che hanno vestito la nostra maglia ed in modo particolare ringrazio il gruppo di quest’anno che ha dimostrato un grandissimo attaccamento alla squadra, alla maglia e agli sponsor. Non dimentichiamo, tra l’altro, che negli ultimi due anni abbiamo dovuto convivere con il Covid-19, diverse volte abbiamo dovuto correre le gare con sole quattro atlete a disposizione, ma siamo riusciti a tenere testa anche a questa situazione e nonostante tutto abbiamo raccolto tante vittorie e soprattutto di qualità”.

I risultati ottenuti sono lì da vedere. “Obiettivi che quando eravamo partiti erano impensabili. Un titolo europeo, medaglie al Mondiale e all’Olimpiade, quattro vittorie di livello WorldTour, meglio di così quest’anno davvero non potevamo fare se consideriamo le squadre di grande spessore e budget che abbiamo davanti. Penso che abbiamo fatto tutti insieme un ottimo lavoro. Il mondo del ciclismo femminile sta crescendo in modo esponenziale – conclude Lacquaniti – ed ora il fatto che una realtà grossa e importante come UAE abbia scelto di investire nella nostra squadra vuol dire che hanno individuato una struttura importante. Questo significa che in questi anni abbiamo fatto qualcosa di significativo e ci deve riempire di orgoglio e soddisfazione. Ora si apre un nuovo capitolo, con un nuovo progetto e con tutto un altro mondo e vedremo quello che accadrà con la nuova proprietà. Il nostro progetto si chiude dopo 11 anni al momento del suo apice e abbiamo colto questa opportunità per guardare avanti e restare competitivi in un mondo che sta correndo velocissimo”.

Alé BTC Ljubljana: super season ends a project that has made women’s cycling history
With the Ronde van Drenthe at the end of October, the last round of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, marked the end of the 2021 season for the Alé BTC Ljubljana team. An extraordinary season, full of results, with 20 total victories, 17 at UCI level, never so many in the history of the women’s team from Verona, the conquest of a European gold medal in time trial and two wonderful silver medals, always in time trial, always with the Swiss Marlen Reusser, at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 and at the Road World Championships Flanders 2021. The team entered the Top 10 110 times.
A season full of successes that brought to an end in the best way a team project started in 2011 thanks to the farsightedness of its president Alessia Piccolo, of the Alé brand and more generally of A.P.G. Srl and of the Zecchetto family, who first, in unsuspected times, decided to believe and invest in women’s cycling, creating a team that in a few years has become one of the most important realities in the world, in a sector that in recent years has experienced an exponential growth.
From next year, as already announced in recent weeks, the team will be part of a new project branded Team UAE, which will open a new chapter and new scenarios for this splendid adventure. But before thinking about the future, today we want to focus for a moment on the past, on this wonderful cycle of 11 years wanted by Alessia Piccolo, in the last 7 years with the team manager Fortunato Lacquaniti at the head of the technical project and on this last magnificent season.
President Alessia Piccolo commented: “As a woman, as a manager and as a cycling enthusiast, I have always believed in the potential of women’s cycling and we can proudly say that we were among the first to believe in this movement and to create an exclusively female professional team. Over the years we’ve grown a lot, we’ve had some great satisfaction and I think we’ve made a big contribution to the growth of the sport and the image of this movement in Italy and around the world. I have to thank all the girls who have worn and honoured the jersey of our team during these eleven seasons. Thanks to our Slovenian friends from BTC Ljubjana who in recent years have shared a piece of our journey with us. I have to say a big thank you to all the staff members who have put in a lot of effort and with their professionalism have supported the activities of our girls in the best possible way. A special thanks goes to Fortunato Lacquaniti who, over the past seven years, as team manager has made a great contribution to the growth of our team. Despite the many difficulties dictated also by the complicated health situation that we have experienced in the last two years, our girls have always managed to be protagonists, to do themselves credit and to bring us to the top of the world rankings. This year we were able to achieve a great dream: the Olympic medal won by Marlen Reusser. We are closing an important chapter in our lives and passing the buck. I believe today, together with my staff, that I have done something very important. Above all, this new step is an act of love and responsibility towards the girls and the entire women’s movement, which is growing by leaps and bounds. With this agreement with UAE, we can guarantee continuity to a project that is very close to our hearts”.
Team manager Fortunato Lacquaniti’s analysis starts from the extraordinary results obtained this year: “In this 2021 our project has reached its peak and the fruits of all that we have built over the years, both in terms of sport and image, have been seen. I think it was the right epilogue to crown an incredible journey, at the end of which we managed to achieve all the goals we had set ourselves, in fact even more than I could have imagined when I started 7 years ago with this team. We started with a small team of only Italian athletes, then came the big step in the WorldTour, when, at the time, many people criticised my choice, but in the long run it proved me right. Now we have a team that, although with a budget far from the top teams, has managed to reach fourth place in the world ranking behind super teams and ahead of other realities much larger and structured than us. This should fill us with pride and I think it rewards everyone for the great work we have done”.
Lacquaniti adds: “Personally, I have to thank the Zecchetto family and Alessia Piccolo who gave me the opportunity to lead this team seven years ago and to carry out my ideas. They were among the first to believe and invest in women’s cycling. I would like to thank the whole team, all the staff members who over the years have made a great contribution to the growth of this team. Everyone has put in the maximum effort and together we have built something special. I have to say thank you to all the girls who have worn our jersey and in particular I would like to thank this year’s group who have shown great attachment to the team, the jersey and the sponsors. Let’s not forget, by the way, that in the last two years we had to live with Covid-19, several times we had to take part to races with only four athletes at our disposal, but we managed to cope with this situation and despite everything we have collected many victories and especially quality”.
The results achieved are there for all to see. “Goals that were unthinkable when we started. An European title, medals at the World Championships and the Olympics, four victories at WorldTour level, we really couldn’t do better than that this year if we consider the big teams and budgets we have in front of us. I think we’ve done a great job together. The world of women’s cycling is growing exponentially – concludes Lacquaniti – and now the fact that a large and important reality as UAE has chosen to invest in our team means that they have identified an important structure. This means that in recent years we have done something significant and it should fill us with pride and satisfaction. Now a new chapter opens, with a new project and a whole new world and we will see what happens with the new ownership. Our project is coming to an end after 11 years at its peak and we have taken this opportunity to look ahead and remain competitive in a world that is moving so fast”.
