Alessandro Fancellu, nuevo corredor
del Polartec-Kometa sub23
El ciclista italiano Alessandro Fancellu, quien este jueves se colgó la medalla de bronce en la prueba junior de fondo en carretera de los Mundiales de Innsbruck 2018, lucirá la próxima temporada los colores del Polartec-Kometa sub23. Avalado por el team manager Ivan Basso, el corredor transalpino desembarca en la categoría en la escuadra que dirige el toledano Rafa Díaz Justo. Todo un paso adelante para el segundo equipo de la Fundación, que comienza a posicionarse como una referencia del campo aficionado.

Fancellu (Como, 24 de abril de 2000) procede del Club Ciclístico Canturino 1902, sociedad deportiva de Cantú, y se convierte en el primer refuerzo de la formación amateur madrileña de cara a la próxima campaña. En una exigente prueba, endurecida por el altísimo ritmo, algunas montoneras severas y una remontada tremenda del medalla de oro Remco Evenepoel, Fancellu cuajó una brillante actuación y conquistó una medalla tras una dura pugna con el suizo Alexandre Balmer. Fancellu y Balmer se quedaron a trece segundos de pelear por la plata que logró el alemán Marius Mayrhofer.
“Remco ha sido el más fuerte. Una carrera durísima. Estoy reventado, pero al mismo tiempo en una nube. No me esperaba conseguir un resultado como éste”, explica Fancellu desde Innsbruck. “Cuando el Polartec-Kometa me contactó fue un momento realmente hermoso, estaba muy feliz por recibir esta oportunidad. No tardé mucho en decidir que quería formar parte de esta bella escuadra. Estoy muy feliz. Y deseando empezar a competir con el Polartec-Kometa”.
“Estoy muy orgulloso de poder sumar a un corredor tan joven para nuestro proyecto ciclista”, valora Ivan Basso. “Desde el primer minuto que le contactamos Alessandro nos mostró su predisposición para venir. La Canturino es una de las escuelas de ciclismo más interesante que tenemos en Italia y estoy muy agradecido a su trabajo y su colaboración. Este tercer puesto en el campeonato del mundo es la mejor foto de ingreso en nuestra escuadra y estoy seguro que con nuestra experiencia podemos ayudarle en el crecimiento de su carrera deportiva”.
Rafa Díaz Justo, director de la escuadra sub23: “Para el equipo es un notición tener entre nosotros al tercero del mundo la categoría, es un refuerzo que nos tiene que dar mucha motivación para seguir trabajando de cara al futuro. Que haya sido capaz de hacer tercero en un mundial tan duro como éste nos dice muchas cosas de él como corredor. Este tipo de carreras no son para cualquier ciclista. Evenepoel es de otra galaxia. Pero Fancellu ha demostrado que está entre los mejores del mundo. Es un escalador puro, pero tiene mucha visión de carrera. No ha destacado por ganar mucho, pero ahondando en su año tiene muchos buenos puestos en grandes carreras”.

The Italian cyclist Alessandro Fancellu, who this Thursday won the bronze medal in the junior road race of the Innsbruck 2018 World Championship, will wear the colors of the Polartec-Kometa sub23 next season. Endorsed by the team manager Ivan Basso, the transalpine runner disembarks in the category in the squad led by Rafa Diaz Justo from Toledo. Fancellu (Como, 24 April 2000) comes from the Club Ciclístico Canturino 1902, sports society of Cantú, and becomes the first reinforcement of the amateur formation of Madrid for the next campaign. In a demanding test, hardened by the very high pace, some severe crashes and a tremendous comeback, after being involved in a fall, the gold medal Remco Evenepoel, Fancellu set a brilliant performance and won a medal after a hard fight with the Swiss Alexandre Balmer. Fancellu and Balmer were just thirteen seconds away from fighting for the silver medal won by the German Marius Mayrhofer.
“Remco was the strongest. A very hard race. I’m bursting, but at the same time in a cloud. I didn’t expect to get a result like this”, explains Fancellu from Innsbruck. “When the Polartec-Kometa contacted me it was a really beautiful moment, I was very happy to receive this opportunity. It didn’t take me long to decide that I wanted to be part of this beautiful squad. I am very happy. And looking forward to competing with Polartec-Kometa”.
“I am very proud to be able to add such a young rider like him to our cycling project”, says Ivan Basso. “From the first minute we contacted him Alessandro showed us his willingness to come. La Canturino is one of the most interesting cycling schools we have in Italy and I am very grateful for his work and collaboration. This third place in the world championship is the best entry photo in our squad and I am sure that with our experience we can help you in the growth of your sporting career”.
Rafa Diaz Justo, director of the U23 squad: “For the team is a news to have among us the third world category, is a reinforcement that has to give us a lot of motivation to continue working for the future. That he has been able to do third place in a world championship as hard as this one tells us a lot about him as a rider. This type of racing is not for any cyclist. Evenepoel is from another galaxy. But Fancellu has shown that he is among the best in the world. He is a pure climber, but he has a lot of tactical vision. He hasn’t stood out for winning much, but going deeper into his year he has many good positions in big races”.
